Day 8, bad weather.
Today’s main destination is Port Arthur. It’s a penal station for the convict’s convicts.
But before that, a quick stop at Eaglehawk neck to see Devil’s kitchen and Tasman Arch
The Tasman Arch.
And Devil’s Kitchen. Not really sure why it’s called that. With the bad weather maybe it makes it even more Devil like.
To Port Arthur. We went on a guided tour.
The tour guide was pretty funny and he taught us a lot of things. Not sure where to start. If you like details, here’s the website.
http://www.portarthur.org.au/
Port Arthur was a penal station for repeated offence of people from UK who were transported to Sydney. In 1830 the penal station was established and it closed in 1877. They were interested in the timber first but by the time 1840 hit, there were about 2000 people who lived here. Fire and other things caused damage to the site but finally in 1927 the government decided to invest some money here and rebuild the area and opened it for tourists. Today, Port Arthur is one of the famous tourist destinations for Tasmania.
The tour that we did was a walking tour and a Harbour cruise but you can also go on a tour to see the juvenile station, the grave yard island and a ghost tour.
The juvenile penal station operated from 1834-49 and had boys from age 9 to 18. They didn’t want to put them together with the adult males because they believed that the boys will be corrupted even more. That's why you have to take the boat there.
So this is the island where they buried thousands of people.
The tour was great but there was another interesting section. When you get your ticket, they also give you one card. When you go downstairs, you will see boxes with different playing cards on. When you open the box, it tells you a story of a convict. Then you can actually follow along to find out what happened to your convict.
I was an old man in his 60’s or something so as soon as I couldn’t work, I ended up in the hospital.
It show the variety of convicts that ended up in Australia. And some of them were transported for year for very little/silly crimes like stealing a clothe or something. Can you imagine leaving you family and coming this far because of that!
We will be staying here for two nights. It’s big and very nice. Just like a real apartment.

Wow!
Lot’s of people were jogging too. I’m so jealous. I with if I lived here so I can run along this path.

Walked quite a bit already.

After a 30 minutes walk, the path lead to a very nice garden and a café.
Lot’s of wallabies and peacocks. When I tried to walk over to the café, a peacock stood in my way with his wings out. I was going to ignore him and walked pass him and he got cross with me. I assumed maybe because I had a white top that he thought I was a female so I took it off right away. So scary. I like looking at birds from a distance better.

A nice path like this was there too.

The weather wasn’t that great but we did check out Coles Bay and Leak Lake. Not worth taking a photo really. Maybe if the weather was nicer.
The hike up to the Wineglass Bay lookout was a descent hike. It takes a fast person 1 hour return. I think we took about 2 hours to do it.
We walked through this.

Oops, I took few days off on updating.
Let’s go!
Anyway, day 6! Tasmania here we come!
First of all, when we got off the ferry at Devonport and we headed straight for breakfast. Raspberry farm café in Christmas Hill, Elizabeth town. The name even sounds so cute especially if you are a raspberry lover like me!
Well, the reason why I wanted to go there was because I found a postcard in the ferry that was like this!
Interested? Here’s their website.
It was a pretty cute café.
We had raspberry beef sausage. Taste? Well, kind of weird. A bit sour and…….. not meaty at all I guess.
Raspberry latte tasted pretty good.
That’s right! I took the photos with my parents’ camera. Well, will upload it some other time.
But, the best part was the chocolate covered raspberries that they had for samples! So good I wanted to buy a whole box of it if I could! But no, so I settled with a raspberry brownie. Yumm.
Now to Cradle Mountain. It’s called Cradle because it looks like a cradle I think. Apparently you get rain here 80% of the time and when we were there it was cloudy so year for us!
It’s called the Pencil Pine Fall. I wonder if it’s call Pencil Pine Falls because you walk through Pencil Pine forest to get there? Pencil Pine, is called Pencil Pine because it looks like a pencil I think. The rainforest is pretty cool and it’s actually a nice walk.
This is Pencil Pine
Lunch, and souvenir shopping, and to the next stop!
We’re going to go see the Devil.
Trowunna Wildlife Park
http://www.trowunna.com.au/
On the way we saw this! A quick stop for one shot.
The park has lots of different kinds of animals like, wombats, kangaroos, koalas, quolls, and snakes but the main thing is the Tasmanian devil.
We were able to see the show (presentation) of the Tassie Devil.
You can actually cuddly with them, look how cute she is???
Tasmanian devil, like kangaroos and koalas are marsupials. In its pocket she has 4 nipples. She normally will give birth to 20 little babies but only the first 4 that got to the pocket survives. Tough.
The look very cute but they are carnivores and they do make a pretty furious noise when they are fighting over the meat and I guess that’s why the Europeans called them devil.
It was pretty scary actually. We were also able to see how a trickster devils can be. The male devil didn’t come out right away and the staff walked around with raw kangaroo meat to try to get him to come out.
He totally pretended that he wasn’t interested and he slowly came up and stole the meat from the female devil.
Wow.
Look at him. He’s eyeing it for sure.
Other animals, Echidna
Wombat
Peacock?
Do they have Peacocks in Australia?
This type of peacock is apparently normally from Asia, but I guess it came all the way to Australia.
Our final destination today is Launceston. But on the way, we found this and decided to take a look.
Honey Farm!

They had Honey ice cream so we had to try.
Delicious!
I bought something here………..
Honey Chocolate Paste.
Hey had, Cinnamon, Hazel nuts and orange too!
I bought the truffle one and it is so good!
It has, honey(57%), cream, cacao in it. It’s sweet, but low calories. I’ve been mixing one teaspoon with hot milk and enjoying hot chocolate. I should have bought more.
I also bought fruit honey, raspberry one but it’s for souvenir so I haven’t tried it yet.
I wonder if it will taste good?

Day 5. Still not in Tasmania????
Early morning in Lorne was beautiful. Lorne actually has a walk path along the beach. What luxury this is. I was looking closely for whales but didn’t see one at all. The ocean was so still not even one wave. Maybe the whales don’t come near the shore when it’s quiet like that.
After breakfast, we decided to take a quick trip to the hot spots in Lorne, Teddy’s lookout and Erskine Falls.
When we got to the falls, there was a sign.
Wow. What a place this is.
Walked down about 200 steps through the rainforest and yes, there it is. The falls!
Very nice.
Now, Teddy’s look out. The look out was quite high and the view was spectacular! Look how blue the ocean is!
That’s where we will be driving now.
Group photo! I think I better cover their faces.
Now, to Port Campbell!
We saw few Echidnas on the way again. I had no idea we will be able to see them so often!
Now, the highlights of Great Ocean Road! These view are a result of gradual process of erosion. It’s pretty amazing.
First, the London Bridge.
The shoreline actually fell in January 1990. Apparently 2 tours got stuck on the other side and had to be rescued with a helicopter. Good think no one got hurt. You can by a before and after postcards.
This place is actually believed to be used as a model in one of the famous Japanese Anime “Kurenai no Buta”. I wonder…
Even this Tiger Moth is said to be the model of the plane that character flies.
Next, the Arch. Look at this shape! Amazing.
And finally the 12 Apostles! There’s only 8 now. The closest one from the look out fell in July 2005 in the morning in front of the tourist. It collapsed in a matter of 1 minute. You can also buy a before and after postcards for this.
This is before the fall.
Now that we hit most of the main spots, we have to drive quickly to Melbourne to catch the ferry to Tasmania. No time to lose!
We will be in Tasmania tomorrow.

Day 4 it is.
I finally got to see the town Yass in the morning. A very cute town. They have a little walking path along the river and few people were out walking their dogs, jogging etc. how nice. The morning fog from the river was quite beautiful. Too bad I didn’t have my camera on me.
Our destination today is a small beach town called Lorne on The Great Ocean Road. We will be driving more than 700km today!
For lunch we stop near Albury.
We don’t have Red Rooster in Japan, and I don’t think we have one in Canada either. The food there is like between KFC and Swiss Chalet. So some chicken meals actually taste like “real” chicken, but they have fast food like things like KFC as well. If you ever come to Australia, you might want to check it out.
After lunch, off to the state of Victoria. Cross the boarder into a town called Wodonga.
They have fruit fly free zone in this area so you can’t bring in fruits. I guess they are very sticked here in Australia because they export these products.
We saw a sign kind of like this one and a bin to throw your fruits out.
Few hours later, Melbourne came into our sight. But since we are not stopping in Melbourne this time, we keep driving towards Geelong and to Great Ocean Road.
The sign showed that Great Ocean Road started at a city called Torquay but you really couldn’t see much of the ocean until you got near Lorne.
We saw a huge welcome sign on the way.
And yes, that’s when it got quite pretty.
Echidna, like Platypus, are mammals but lay eggs. Echidna and Platypus are the only two kinds of animals that do this unique thing and they both live in Australia. How neat.
For those of you who have no idea what a platypus is, it looks like this.
Our accommodation tonight, Great Ocean Road Cottage, again self contained with shower and kitchen. Very nice no?

Very cold morning. I’ve been spoiled with beautiful weather in Queensland it felt like it was going to snow! It was that cold. Of course it was raining too.
And then, something totally unexpected happened.
I was looking at the ocean and all of the sudden, “Splash!” What the??? And again “Splash!”
Yes, it was a whale. My mom and I saw it first, she actually thought that a ship tipped over or something. After that you could see it waving with its tail, and you can also see the water spraying from the shore. Wow! So amazing.
I’ve been wanting to see a whale every since I’ve been in Australia I even thought about doing on a whale watching tour so needless to say that I was pretty excited.
I couldn’t stop talking about it all day!
Of course we couldn’t get a shot of it but it was probably a Humpback whale.
Now to Sydney.
We got there in less than 2 hours I think and it was raining when we got there. We got on the Sydney Explore tour bus and saw the city from the bus.
After Sydney, we kind of went inland towards Canberra the capital. We stayed at a small town called Yass. Yass was a very cute town actually, with a river running through it. This area is known for their Wool.
Accommodation for the night, a B&B in a very old building. I can see some of you really liking this place. An English lady was there to welcome us. The cake that she baked was delicious! so moist.

Day 2. Start driving towards Tasmania. The final destination today is Wamberal. A small town less than 2 hours from Sydney near Gosford.
Where the yellow star is.
Had breakfast and on our way! Of course we will be making some stops along the way too.
Gold Coast (Brisbane) is in Queensland but pretty close to New South Wales.
There was a construction when going into town and it took a long time so we decided to take another route out. A gorgeous route it ended up being. Lot’s of hills, kind of like Biei in Hokkaido.
Unfortunately, no photos.
2nd stop, Coffs Harbour, the Big Banana.
Stop at a Digger’s Beach first to have our picnic. There we saw magpie family. Magpie is a black in white bird you find everywhere around here. ( I will write more about them another time) Very unique singing voice they have, sometimes I think they harmonize even.
But this was the first time that I had seen a family. The baby is pretty much the same size as the adult but was chirping and following the parent around. The parent was busy collecting bug for the baby and feeding it. We enjoyed out lunch wondering if it was the father.
It’s kind of odd that they have a huge banana in the middle of no where. Apparently they grow a lot of bananas in this area. They had a shop full of banana souvenirs! If you like bananas you will love it.
We also had banana ice cream for dessert. It was so yummy, it tasted like real banana!
After our two stops, driving driving to Wamberal. 850km in total that day, it’s a long way.
Totally forgot about the time difference in Queensland and New South Wales so by the time we got to the place, it was 10pm. Long day!
But Tasmania is still far away.

Tasventure, Day 1.
I woke up at 5am to meet my parents and friend at the airport. Since we were staying at my place (my landlord’s) we decided to go make a trip close by.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. About 30 minutes from Brisbane airport in Fig Tree Pocket. This sanctuary is the oldest and the largest Koala sanctuary in Australia and they have 130 Koalas! Of course, they have other Australian animals like Wombats, Possums, Echidnas, Kangaroos, and Wallabies.
It was a pretty hot day so the Kangaroos were resting in their resting area. It’s funny that they even have a sign that says resting area.
Wallbies and kangaroos were resting like this. You think it's comfortable sitting on your tail?
And of course, you can go near the Roos and touch them.
We saw a presentation on Koalas and Snakes.
And touch.
触る。
And touch more.
Opps. Maybe I was too scared.
I didn’t touch the snake but my parents sure did.
Did you all that Koalas have a poo baby food? Well they do. There is a technical term for this. I just can’t remember. It’s because eucalyptus is so difficult to digest so the baby’s can’t digest them by themselves. I had seen this on TV before. What was new to me this time was the territorial noise that Koalas make. You can’t imagine a cute cuddly Koala making that noise! It’s kind of like a pig? Horse? Cow? Bear? Fairly deep. Can you imagine? You have to hear it I think. You always learn something new.
Another thing that was interesting was that I learned that few Australian animals, the male actually nurture the baby and not the female. The female just has the baby! We were thinking that this might have something to do with their survival in the harsh Australian climate. The females can focus on having the babies. You think? So interesting.
For dinner, we went to a Korean restaurant in Southport. This place is actually called “Manna”
Then a quick walk along the ocean. Lot’s of big bats as usual. Now that we are totally relax, we are really ready for the trip.

Kuba waga kilmu (Lardil language: hello everybody)
August 28th, I will be starting my teaching practice at a primary school in Mornington Island. Mornington Island State School is located in a township called Gununa on Mornigton Island, the largest islands out of the Wellesley Island group, in northern Queensland, in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
The School Vision is “Thaldi Bana Merri” (Come and Learn) Courage, Choice, Challenge. They compare the students to sea turtles. Through out the life, there will be a lot of challenges, but without forgetting your roots, with courage, make good choices and learn from the many challenges and return to your homeland.
Mornington Island is an indigenous community. The school seem to value the cultural aspect of the people.
It sounds great.
I found their Home page if anyone want to check it out.
You can get an idea of the school and the students.
The name of the classes are in Lardil language, Kendabal means dugong, Juwan means dolphin, Balibal means stingray, Wardun means dingo, names of various creatures found locally.

We went swimming in a lot of water falls on our trip. It fells pretty nice.
First stop over at Litchfield National Park. Went on a little hike with a beautiful view like this and…..

Our first water falls! It’s Tolmer falls. No swimming here.

Isabell had to be the first one to jump in!
By the falls in the rocks, there was a little pool. I’m not a strong swimmer so I didn’t swim there, but the guys that went there said that the water was warmer there.
Some people go in the falls.
Because we went in July in the dry season, we could swim but in the rainy season it looks like this!
Next stop, Florence Falls. So beautiful.

There is a chance that a wild crocodile may be where we are swimming so there is a warning sign.
It’s even in Japanese.
But how can you not swim when the water is so clear like this! Lots of little fish came near us and were nipping us. I wonder if sunscreen tastes good?
A bit more hiking and there’s swimming areas like this too!
You could smell someone having a BBQ. How relaxing.

More from Kakadu!
In Kakadu there are a lot of termite mounds. There are very fascinating to say the least.
Apparently, termites are not really related to ants but cockroaches. We call them white ants in Japanese so you would think that they are the same family with ants. I don’t know if I believe my tour guide on that one.
Let’s look at the Cathedral ones first. They are huge first of all. It’s called cathedral because of the shape. There is a reason for the Cathedral termites to design there mound like this. First if all, the surface is bumpy which makes the mound stronger. Secondly, the air will travel through the parts that are dented to cool down the temperature of the mound. Lastly, because it’s so bumpy, it only collects sunlight on one side, and the opposite side will be in the shadow and they can control the temperature this way as well.
You can estimate that it took the termites 10 years to build 1m of the mound. So this one….. Kathrin who is standing in front is probably about 180cm tall, so this will be about 6m? An 60 years old termite mound! The tour guide actually thinks it's about 80 years old!
When the king of the mound dies, he will be replaced with another king. But when the queen dies, the whole mound will die and eventually fall apart and go back to earth. That mean, the queen of this mound is 80 years old!
In the termite world, they have the worker and the solders just like ants I think. When they are born, their all same but when they are given responsibility, the body loses all functions that are unnecessary for that role.
Our tour guide pocked a hole in the mound.
Wow! Look at all the soldiers coming out!!!
The Magnetic termite mounds are called that because ALL mounds face the magnetic north. Amazing. How do they know which way is north? Apparently if the mound is off by a bit even, the mound will fall apart. Wow. It is interesting when you see many next to each other. It almost looks like you’re at a cemetery or something.
Of course, there is a reason for the magnetic termites to design there mound like this. It is design to catch the sun when it’s rising and setting when the temperature is cooler, but not catch much during the day when it’s hot. So more surface area on the sides but not on top. This way, they can keep the temperature around 30 degrees centigrade. Very clever. The magnetic termites can survive in the damp wet area and prefers an open area without threes. That’s why you don’t see a cathedral termite mound right next to a Magnetic termite mounds.
Termites either eat threes or grass. You know the instrument didgeridoo from Australia? Well, that is made out of threes that were eaten by terminates. Majority of the threes around are eaten by termites. But these termites do have an important role here in Australia, to their ecosystem, especially the ones that eat grass. Australia doesn’t have many large grazing animals like deer and zebra like Africa. But there termites take the role of the grazing animals! It’s amazing how the nature works.

In Kakadu National Park, there is a place called Ubirr which was a lot of Aboriginal Rock Art.
Ubirr is a gorgeous place. You can totally see how sacred this place is for the Aboriginal people.
Generally there are two types of Aboriginal Rock Art. One which has a lesson to learn from so the art itself is important and the other the act of painting the art is important.
The art what has a lesson usually has a story that goes with it. These art itself is important and it is well taken care of. There was one place in Ubirr where the rocks were laid out like a lecture theatre, and of course they had some art with lessons there. You can totally picture everyone sitting in front of the art end the elder telling a story.
The other one, the act of painting is important and not the art itself. Because of this, many arts are painted over on top of each other. I guess it’s more of a ritual. For example, they might draw an animal to wish for a good hunting, or draw the sickness when someone is sick so they can get better.
There were a lot of different art there.
A fish with no head. This fish is always painted without its head. Apparently the fish blood spoils the meat right away so when you catch the fish, you cut its head off and drain the blood to keep the meat fresh and tasty. So, this fish is always painted without the head. I guess kids will remember the rules when fishing by looking at these arts.
Tasmanian Tiger. It shows that this animal used to live in Australia. It was the Dingo that destroyed Tasmanian tiger in Australia.
A painting of a white person. He has his hand in his pocket and telling people what to do.
Stencil hand print. They put the paint in their mouth and sprayed on the hand and made this art.
One of the other interesting things about aboriginal art is that they used minerals to paint them. Because of this, they have no way of identifying when the pictures were painted. They can only estimate by looking at what kind of animals and tools that are painted. If they would have used plants etc. there would have been carbon in it and they can do a carbon test to see when it was painted. So much mystery.
Here's a painting in a location where humans can't reach. The aboriginal people say it was the spirit who painted there.
Enjoy the view of Ubirr.

]]>Did you know…..
Finally! I saw some wild crocodiles!
On the 5 day Kakadu camp tour, we went on a cruise in Mary River. We left for the cruise around 8 am and were out there for about 2 hours. We saw more than 20 crocodiles! Saltwater and Fresh water crocs!
I was so anxious. When I saw the first one it was really exciting!
So, our first crocodile!
It’s a saltwater crocodile.
Another one. This one has its mouth open as well.
Crocodiles seem very furious but they are pretty lazy. Surprisingly crocodiles are not big eaters as they spend most of their time lazing in the sun and living off stored body fat. They have to keep the body temperature to 30 degrees so maybe especially lazy in the winter. They just sit in the sun to raise their body temperature. I guess that water is a bit too cold for them.
I guess they open their mouth so the temperature of the brain doesn’t get too high.
Even though they look lazy, Salty’s can attack humans so when we enter their habitat we have to be really careful.
This one is half in water. I wonder if he's already warmed up?
Wow! A Freshy!
Can you tell the difference? The Freshwater crocodiles are smaller and their jaw is quite different from a saltwater crocodiles.
They eat smaller animals like insects and frogs etc. They normally will not attack humans, but if you go near their nests I’m sure they will bit.
A female crocodile lays about 40 eggs in a prepared mound of grass on a river bank
Crocodiles in the early days were hunted for their valuable skins but are now completely protected
