August 28th, I will be starting my teaching practice at a primary school in Mornington Island. Mornington Island State School is located in a township called Gununa on Mornigton Island, the largest islands out of the Wellesley Island group, in northern Queensland, in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The School Vision is “Thaldi Bana Merri” (Come and Learn) Courage, Choice, Challenge. They compare the students to sea turtles. Through out the life, there will be a lot of challenges, but without forgetting your roots, with courage, make good choices and learn from the many challenges and return to your homeland. Mornington Island is an indigenous community. The school seem to value the cultural aspect of the people. It sounds great. I found their Home page if anyone want to check it out. You can get an idea of the school and the students. http://www.mornislass.eq.edu.au/index.html クラスの名前もLardil語。 The name of the classes are in Lardil language, Kendabal means dugong, Juwan means dolphin, Balibal means stingray, Wardun means dingo, names of various creatures found locally. Some pictures from the town We went swimming in a lot of water falls on our trip. It fells pretty nice. First stop over at Litchfield National Park. Went on a little hike with a beautiful view like this and….. Our first water falls! It’s Tolmer falls. No swimming here. Next falls, Wangi Falls. Let’s swim! Isabell had to be the first one to jump in! By the falls in the rocks, there was a little pool. I’m not a strong swimmer so I didn’t swim there, but the guys that went there said that the water was warmer there. Some people go in the falls. Because we went in July in the dry season, we could swim but in the rainy season it looks like this! Next stop, Florence Falls. So beautiful. There is a chance that a wild crocodile may be where we are swimming so there is a warning sign. It’s even in Japanese. But how can you not swim when the water is so clear like this! Lots of little fish came near us and were nipping us. I wonder if sunscreen tastes good? A bit more hiking and there’s swimming areas like this too! You could smell someone having a BBQ. How relaxing. #

More from Kakadu! In Kakadu there are a lot of termite mounds. There are very fascinating to say the least. Apparently, termites are not really related to ants but cockroaches. We call them white ants in Japanese so you would think that they are the same family with ants. I don’t know if I believe my tour guide on that one. (日本語の正式名はわかりませんが) Anyway, in this picture, the one in the back is the Cathedral termite mounds, and the one in the front is the Magnetic termite mounds. Let’s look at the Cathedral ones first. They are huge first of all. It’s called cathedral because of the shape. There is a reason for the Cathedral termites to design there mound like this. First if all, the surface is bumpy which makes the mound stronger. Secondly, the air will travel through the parts that are dented to cool down the temperature of the mound. Lastly, because it’s so bumpy, it only collects sunlight on one side, and the opposite side will be in the shadow and they can control the temperature this way as well. You can estimate that it took the termites 10 years to build 1m of the mound. So this one….. Kathrin who is standing in front is probably about 180cm tall, so this will be about 6m? An 60 years old termite mound! The tour guide actually thinks it's about 80 years old! When the king of the mound dies, he will be replaced with another king. But when the queen dies, the whole mound will die and eventually fall apart and go back to earth. That mean, the queen of this mound is 80 years old! In the termite world, they have the worker and the solders just like ants I think. When they are born, their all same but when they are given responsibility, the body loses all functions that are unnecessary for that role. Our tour guide pocked a hole in the mound. Wow! Look at all the soldiers coming out!!! The Magnetic termite mounds are called that because ALL mounds face the magnetic north. Amazing. How do they know which way is north? Apparently if the mound is off by a bit even, the mound will fall apart. Wow. It is interesting when you see many next to each other. It almost looks like you’re at a cemetery or something. Of course, there is a reason for the magnetic termites to design there mound like this. It is design to catch the sun when it’s rising and setting when the temperature is cooler, but not catch much during the day when it’s hot. So more surface area on the sides but not on top. This way, they can keep the temperature around 30 degrees centigrade. Very clever. The magnetic termites can survive in the damp wet area and prefers an open area without threes. That’s why you don’t see a cathedral termite mound right next to a Magnetic termite mounds. Termites either eat threes or grass. You know the instrument didgeridoo from Australia? Well, that is made out of threes that were eaten by terminates. Majority of the threes around are eaten by termites. But these termites do have an important role here in Australia, to their ecosystem, especially the ones that eat grass. Australia doesn’t have many large grazing animals like deer and zebra like Africa. But there termites take the role of the grazing animals! It’s amazing how the nature works. #

In Kakadu National Park, there is a place called Ubirr which was a lot of Aboriginal Rock Art. Ubirr is a gorgeous place. You can totally see how sacred this place is for the Aboriginal people. Generally there are two types of Aboriginal Rock Art. One which has a lesson to learn from so the art itself is important and the other the act of painting the art is important. The art what has a lesson usually has a story that goes with it. These art itself is important and it is well taken care of. There was one place in Ubirr where the rocks were laid out like a lecture theatre, and of course they had some art with lessons there. You can totally picture everyone sitting in front of the art end the elder telling a story. The other one, the act of painting is important and not the art itself. Because of this, many arts are painted over on top of each other. I guess it’s more of a ritual. For example, they might draw an animal to wish for a good hunting, or draw the sickness when someone is sick so they can get better. There were a lot of different art there. A fish with no head. This fish is always painted without its head. Apparently the fish blood spoils the meat right away so when you catch the fish, you cut its head off and drain the blood to keep the meat fresh and tasty. So, this fish is always painted without the head. I guess kids will remember the rules when fishing by looking at these arts. Tasmanian Tiger. It shows that this animal used to live in Australia. It was the Dingo that destroyed Tasmanian tiger in Australia. A painting of a white person. He has his hand in his pocket and telling people what to do. Stencil hand print. They put the paint in their mouth and sprayed on the hand and made this art. One of the other interesting things about aboriginal art is that they used minerals to paint them. Because of this, they have no way of identifying when the pictures were painted. They can only estimate by looking at what kind of animals and tools that are painted. If they would have used plants etc. there would have been carbon in it and they can do a carbon test to see when it was painted. So much mystery. Here's a painting in a location where humans can't reach. The aboriginal people say it was the spirit who painted there. Enjoy the view of Ubirr. When you get to the top of the rocks You can see the wet/flood lands So beautiful! #

Finally! I saw some wild crocodiles! On the 5 day Kakadu camp tour, we went on a cruise in Mary River. We left for the cruise around 8 am and were out there for about 2 hours. We saw more than 20 crocodiles! Saltwater and Fresh water crocs! I was so anxious. When I saw the first one it was really exciting! So, our first crocodile! It’s a saltwater crocodile. Another one. This one has its mouth open as well. This one is huge! Even closer? Seriously? Crocodiles seem very furious but they are pretty lazy. Surprisingly crocodiles are not big eaters as they spend most of their time lazing in the sun and living off stored body fat. They have to keep the body temperature to 30 degrees so maybe especially lazy in the winter. They just sit in the sun to raise their body temperature. I guess that water is a bit too cold for them. I guess they open their mouth so the temperature of the brain doesn’t get too high. Even though they look lazy, Salty’s can attack humans so when we enter their habitat we have to be really careful. This one is half in water. I wonder if he's already warmed up? Wow! A Freshy! Can you tell the difference? The Freshwater crocodiles are smaller and their jaw is quite different from a saltwater crocodiles. They eat smaller animals like insects and frogs etc. They normally will not attack humans, but if you go near their nests I’m sure they will bit. A female crocodile lays about 40 eggs in a prepared mound of grass on a river bank Crocodiles in the early days were hunted for their valuable skins but are now completely protected #
